ALISON Phillips can this week reflect one of the proudest moments in her athletics career as team manager, writes Kevin Fahey.

In her fifth season as manager of the Team Bath AC squad for the Avon Track & Field League Phillips, who lives in Hilperton, guided the club to their first ever victory in the competition that was launched back in the 1980s.

That represents a considerable achievement especially as the league comprises all age groups – from under 13s to seniors – so a high level of consistency is required over the four matches.

“We came so close last year when we lost the title to North Somerset AC in the last match so it is brilliant to win it,” said Phillips.

“It is our local league so to finally win it reflects very well on the club, the athletes, coaches and parents and it is very satisfying.”

Phillips who was closely helped by Caroline Howorth also of Hilperton, reckons the club called upon between 150-200 athletes over the four matches, many of whom live in Wiltshire, underlining the growth of Team Bath AC as the premier local club representing the county’s track & field athletes.

“The result is entirely down to the fantastic bunch of young athletes we have got and their strength in depth, commitment and real team spirit,” added Phillips.

“Being a team manager is hard work but it is worth to see these youngsters develop as athletes and as people.

“It takes real courage to compete and test yourself in a sport.”

There was also a personal moment of pride as mum for Phillips.

“It was really nice for me too as my daughter Katie was competing as she was still home from university,” she explained.

“She joined Team Bath aged 11 and competed regularly in a variety of events from high jump to hammer making it through to represent Wiltshire at the regional (South West) schools’ several years running.”
