SWINDON Spitfires United manager, Diane George, will enjoy her side climbing to second in the Wiltshire League after seeing off Swindon Town development team.

The hosts rarely tested Shona Hanlon in between the sticks and United looked comfortable as they sealed the points.

It took nearly 30 minutes to open the scoring but it was worth the wait. Jody Nicholls seeing her strike from 35 yards, leave the Town ‘keeper stranded.

Five minutes later Mel Bristow extended the lead after meeting a well-timed Claire Morton pass and placing her shot home.

In the second half, it was Town giving Hanlon her first test.

United continued to play some really good football and were rewarded with a third goal on 59 minutes. A Zofie Stepien flick reached Morton who again found Bristow for her second of the match.

Morton came close, hitting the crossbar, and three minutes from time Carla Compton though she had scored only to see a bobble take the ball pver the bar.

On 90 minutes Town did find a goal with only their second shot of the match, after the striker broke through the defence and slotted past Hanlon.

However, United extended their lead deep into injury time as the ball fell kindly to Bristow, who shot from 25 yards, securing her hat-trick.

The tally could have been more if the Town ‘keeper hadn't kept her side in the game.

Spitfires’ Development were quick of the mark in their 8-1 win over Market Lavington & Easterton. Hayley Shipp converting an Amy Mathews delivery with just 35 seconds on the clock.

A second followed three minutes later when Mathews was on the end of a Lisa Matthews cross from the right.

Spitfires then went through a profligate period, although the Lavington keeper did pull off a couple of first class saves from both Matthews and Shipp.

The third did eventually come, Vicky Parry splitting the defence for Mathews to notch her second on 24 minutes.

A little bit of complacency and a slip at the back allowed the hosts to pull one back on 29 minutes.

However Mathews completed her hat-trick in the final minute of the half as she latched onto a great cut back from Georgia Coward.

Spitfires’ fifth came on 54 minutes, Sammie Smith collecting a clearance from the Lavington ‘keeper before firing it back over her. Then a minute later a Coward chip-pass allowed Matthews a clear run on goal to power home.

Shipp delivered a great cross to the far post for player of the match, Emma Broughton, to slot through a crowded box into the far corner in the 64th minute. A Smith cross on 87 minutes resulted in a Lavington player turning the ball past her own keeper to make it 8-1.

Some great work by Becky Kench and Sophie Kirby prevented Lavington profiting from a late break away.

Then Smith completed the scoring in the final minute with another dipping shot that left the keeper grasping at air.
