DESPITE a spirited fightback, Westbury United were unable to put the brakes on in-form Almondsbury UWE last weekend.

The visitors, who had won seven of their last nine league games going in to last Saturday’s clash at Meadow Lane, saw off Adam Collington’s side, who ended the afternoon with ten men after Dan Hurkeet saw red, 2-0.

Westbury got off to the worst possible start as they allowed James Fitzpatrick to give Almondsbury the lead with a free header from a corner in the opening minute.

Steven Fitzpatrick, Simon McElroy, Ricky Chandler and James Fitzpatrick all had chances to extend the visitors’ lead before United’s only chance of the half fell to Kevin Shinn but he could only head Craig Sheppard’s set-piece wide of the mark.

And when Nathan Hallett-Young gifted the ball to Nick Rugman, he took advantage to double Almondsbury’s lead with 33 minutes on the clock.

But despite Dan Hurkett being sent off for two bookable offences either side of half-time, Westbury finished the game on the front foot, with Shinn, Nathan Hallett and Mark Young all threatening to spark a comeback.

Collington’s men host high-flying Wincanton Town this weekend.
