TROWBRIDGE never recoved from conceding three first-half tries despite a strong second-half fightback at Newbury.

The visiting pack made a fine start, carrying the ball in a rolling maul almost to the try line before losing control.

Nevertheless, Ashley Chalk intercepted a pass from the counter attack and ran in to score, Lloyd Davis adding the extras.

Newbury struck back with a penalty from fly-half Ritchie West and both sides continued to test each other’s defence until from a poor clearance kick from the visitors’ led to an overlap in the backs and a score from Newbury number eight Ed Fairbrother.

Will Clarke added the conversion and, with the home pack, beginning to get on top, it was not long before the pressure told.

Newbury ran in a try apiece from hooker Chris Rowland and wing forward Josh Love, both converted by Clarke for a comfortable half-time advantage.

Trowbridge made the perfect start to the second period, forcing the hosts to defend until Adam Sullivan crashed through the defence to score.

Davis was again successful with the conversion but, as the game started to swing Trowbridge’s way, the visitors gave the ball away from a lineout and were punished with a score from Newbury wing Jamie Futcher, Clarke’s conversion stretching his side clear again.

Trowbridge mounted another series of attacks this time resulting in a maiden score from youngster Shai Bonnick.
