FAIRFORD Town manager Gareth Davies was left a happy man after seeing his side pick up a second win in a matter of four days and haul themselves off the foot of the Hellenic League Division One West table.

The Cinder Lane men travelled to second-from-bottom Letcombe knowing that a win would see them leap frog their hosts.

And by the time the interval came around, Davies’ side were 2-0 up and that is how it stayed.

The opening goal came midway through the opening 45 minutes when Luke Cordery delivered a testing ball into the Letcombe area.

The ball then struck Jack Allen on the head and instead of bouncing to safety it fell to Tom Ballard and he drilled it home.

With the half drawing to a close, Ballard burst into the Letcombe area only to be scythed down leaving the referee no option but to point to the spot and Allen made no mistake from 12 yards.

Fairford managed to see the second half out without conceding to build on their Floodlit Cup success over Premier Division side Milton United.

“It was a great performance,” Davies said. “Everyone was an eight out of 10.

“In games gone by we’ve had a couple of eights and the rest fours or fives out of 10, I think the boys are now realising what it takes to win football matches.”

The success at Letcombe moved Fairford up to 12th in the table and before the game Davies was contemplating whether or not to make any changes from the side that beat Milton.

And while Joe Snell came in for the injured keeper Mike Alexander, the remainder of team stayed unchanged.

“We ummed and arred about whether to make changes as we had four or five players back from injury,” Davies said.

“But we resisted, the lads who got the win on Tuesday night deserved another chance to go out there.

“You should never change a winning team and we didn’t, the shirt is now theirs to lose.

“The win also moved us off the bottom and with (10th placed) Tytherington Rocks next we have got to be thinking about another three points.”

Purton lost out to table-toppers Longlevens 2-0 at The Red House.

A Brad Martin strike and an own goal doing for Justin Miller’s side. That result sees Purton’s losing run extend to four games.
