DAVE Webb’s Swindon Supermarine side are down on their luck but the Webb’s Wood Stadium chief says that all his side can do is keep plugging away in the Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West.

Marine slipped to a frustrating 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Wimborne Town on Saturday, with Dave Bampton’s misplaced pass gifting the visitors the winning goal whilst a number of opportunities went begging at the other end.

“We just don’t seem to be having any luck and sometimes in football, you need a bit of luck, and we’re certainly not having any of that at the moment,” said Webb.

“It’s very frustrating for me as the manager and, I’m sure, very frustrating for the players. We had a very open and frank conversation in the dressing room and we have to try and work through this.

“The first goal was a poor goal - we’ve given the ball away on the halfway line. And then Dave Bampton’s made an uncharacteristic error five minutes into the second half to give them a second goal and it’s very, very difficult to do that at this level and expect to win.

“I’m a believer that you have to create your own luck.

“The quality of the squad is there to see. The players are here. We’re just going through one of those spells at the moment and the only way we get out of that is to work hard.”

Harry Etheridge grabbed the hosts’ consolation goal as the visitors took all three points courtesy of Matt Kemble and Jamie Davidson but the Marine midfielder missed a guilt-edged chance to draw his side level in the second period whilst young striker Ryan Stanners saw an effort curl onto the post when he had an open goal to aim at, albeit from a tight angle.

Boss Webb said: “I really feel for Ryan Stanners. It’s his first season at this level and he’s desperate to do well, desperate to score.

“He’s done everything right and then hit the inside of the post and the ball’s come out. I was just hoping that he was going to get up and running because that’s all his play lacks; just that little bit of luck in front of goal.

“The lad’s so down it’s unbelievable but he has to work through it and the next time he plays, get a goal.”

The Marine manager admitted that his side were looking to make moves in the recent local transfer merry-go-round, with former striker Josh Parsons leaving Hungerford Town this week and ex-Swindon Town youngster Mark Francis joining Chippenham Town from Frome Town, but Webb says that no new signings have come to fruition as of yet.

“We’ve been trying. We did speak to Josh Parsons and Mark Francis is one that we were definitely after,” he said.

“We’re looking but unfortunately it hasn’t come off yet. We’ll just keep looking and keep working with the lads we’ve got to try and get them scoring.”

Marine’s misery was compounded on Saturday as they lost both Ross Adams and Kyle Lapham to injury.
