ROYAL Wootton Bassett head coach Alan Low said he was left feeling underwhelmed by his side’s 43-5 success over Southern Counties North strugglers Wallingford.

The Ballards Ash side put on a scintillating display of rugby in the opening 40 minutes in front the club’s vice-presidents and went in at the break 31-0 up.

However, Low and his coaching team switched things around during the interval and the Bassett coach was left feeling disappointed come full-time.

“First and foremost, we always look at the performance,” he said. “And in the second half, it wasn’t what we expected.

“I know people will look at the result and see that we got the W but it is the performance that we focus on. If you look at the games against Stow and Thatcham, we played a lot better and lost.”

Hamish Keith grabbed himself a first half hat-trick for Bassett while Tom Wickham capped his league debut, with Gavin Ougan also getting himself on the scoresheet.

“In the second half, we had lots of possession and territory but we just couldn’t convert that into points,” Low said.

“Wallingford defended quite well in the second half but it was more our own mistakes that let us down.

“It was a VPs day at the club on Saturday, so there were lots of the old boys down there watching and it was a great atmosphere – it is just a shame our second half performance wasn’t as good as the first.”
