SHRIVENHAM boss Sam Collier will be hoping that Saturday’s shock win over second place Ascot United will provide a stepping stone for the rest of the season.

The Barrington Park side travelled to Berkshire with a thread-bare squad and after a poor warm-up it didn’t look like Shrivvy would be walking away with the three points.

Collier’s side dug deep though and pulled off the surprise result of the day and, with Cheltenham Saracens losing to Bracknell 5-2, gave themselves a bit of breathing room at the bottom.

Shrivenham now face Saracens’ conquerors and despite still having forward problems will be looking to build on Saturday’s good result.

“Saturday will count for nothing if we go on another three or four game run of defeats again,” said Collier.

“We enjoyed Saturday night but it is important that we kick on on Wednesday against Bracknell.

“At home to Bracknell is another tough game and by all means a win on Saturday has not kept us up but it is a huge stepping stone for us trying to kick on.

“We’ve got to take the positives from Saturday and go again now.”

Elsewhere Wootton Bassett Town face Reading Town at home looking to bounce back from Saturday’s last minute defeat to Holyport.

“It is another game we have got to get ourselves up for,” said Bassett boss Paul Braithwaite.

“It is a team sort of mid-table, slightly above where we are in the league, we’ve obviously had a hard two games.

“Reading will be a tough game, they have made a little bit of a surge recently, but we’re confident in what we are doing and I have got a good bunch of lads.

“We played well against Ardley and how we lost that game was only down to certain reasons that are out of my control and then Saturday was unfortunate but we can take some positives from the game.

“We’ll go into the Reading game and we’ll look to do as we have done and try and get ourselves a point or three.”

Highworth Town fell to their first defeat in four matches as they lost 1-0 at home to Ardley United in Hellenic League Premier Division.

The Worthians, who face Bridport in the FA Vase on Saturday, were hoping to build on their 5-0 success over Downton in the Wiltshire Senior Cup at the weekend.

However, following a goalless first 45 minutes, the visitors, who had defeated Bassett earlier this month, snatched the points with 20 minutes left on clock when Callum Convey slammed home spot-kick.
