PUPILS at Shaw Ridge Primary School got the point of fencing, having all passed their grade one awards in a new PE course.

Over the last six weeks the children at Shaw Ridge have been partaking in a course during physical education lessons, with 16 of them receiving their British Fencing Association Grade One Award in Foil.

They have also been given the opportunity to attend a free session at Swindon Fencing Club on a Wednesday evening to continue their development.

Fencing coach Neil Bromley said: “The children seem to have had a great time and learnt lots too.

“Fencing’s unique mix of physical and intellectual stimulation can burn approximately 400 calories per hour so the children certainly got a workout each session. Since you need to make lightning-fast decisions, it is also excellent for concentration and focus, all of which I think appeals to children of all ages.”

PE coordinator Shaun Carter believes the programme shows the school’s continued push towards promotin alternative sports.

He said: “Shaw Ridge are looking to create new opportunities for all children to experience through sport and exercise. Year Five have thoroughly enjoyed fencing and it’s been fantastic to hear of pupils attending fencing club outside of school due to their participation in PE.

Luke Whitem, a pupil at the school said, said “The moves we learnt and the games we played in our fencing classes were great. I want to join Swindon Fencing Club so I can meet other people and have fun with them too.”

Fellow pupil Libbie Croucher endorsed this by saying “Fencing is really fun. I did it in school and at the club. More people should try it.”
