ADAM Westall hopes to see Swindon further ahead of schedule when they sign off for Christmas at home to Leighton Buzzard on Saturday.

Skipper Westall says Swindon had aimed for a 40-point return from the first half of the season but they are already six points in front of that objective.

That has put them up to fourth in South West 1 East and Westall’s next goal is to reach the half-century mark before the two-week festive break.

“We targeted finishing at Christmas with 40 points and we’ve already beaten that,” said fly-half Westall.

“In this league you have to focus on getting yourself safe first before you can think about challenging at the top.

“With 46 points on the board at the halfway stage we won’t have to worry about relegation. We can go into 2015 with more freedom and express ourselves a bit more, and just look where that takes us.

“We’ve started really well this season, so it’s important for us to try to keep the momentum going.”

Swindon are looking to do the double over Leighton Buzzard having triumphed 29-14 on the trip to Bedfordshire in the season curtain raiser.

Westall says his troops will be wary of a response to that defeat and added that boss Sean Lynn and his coaching team had given Swindon plenty of motivation themselves.

“They’ve got a big pack and are tough to beat, so we know what to expect when we come up against them,” added Westall.

“We won at their place on the first day of the season, so I’m sure they’ll come down here looking to avenge that.

“We have got a full squad to select from and I’m sure that’ll give the coaches a few headaches, but that’s the best way to have it.

“We’re certainly targeting a win as that’s the best way to finish before a break and it’ll certainly make Christmas a bit sweeter.

“And if we do it means we won’t get flogged in the first session back either, because I know some of the tight-five lads do like to over indulge.”
