SWINDON scrum-half Connal Knott wants to make sure of fourth place in the South West 1 East table when his side bring down the curtain on their season tomorrow.

Sean Lynn’s men made the most of Witney’s slip-up at Maidenhead last weekend to climb above them into the top four with a 28-12 success at home to Devizes.

They now know that any win away at mid-table side Grove on Saturday will mean they cannot be overhauled.

Fourth would mark solid consistency for Swindon, who have finished in that position twice in their three seasons at this level, with the exception being last term, when they came fifth.

Knott would have liked to have seen Swindon be a bit closer to the title battle but conceded that a four-game losing streak soon after the turn of the year scuppered those chances.

“Witney got beat last weekend, so we have been able to move above them. If we can get another win against Grove, we’ll finish fourth, so that’s not too bad for the season,” said Knott.

“We’ve finished fourth the last couple of years, so we certainly haven’t got any worse. It would have been nice to finish in the top two or three but we had a really bad period just after Christmas, which cost us.

“We’ll have a bit of a break now then come back together in June and get together and talk about what we want to do.

“We all play because we just love rugby but it will be nice to have a bit of a rest over the summer so the boys can get over a few niggling injuries.”

Swindon faced Grove in their season opener back in September and are likely to come up against a much different side than the one they beat 35-13 at Greenbridge Road that day.

The Oxfordshire outfit have won nine of their last 10 home games in the league, with the other being a defeat by a single point.

Knott acknowledges that Swindon face a stiff test but hopes that a fully-fit squad can boost their chances at Cane Lane.

“Grove are a bit of a strange side, they seem to go up and down with their form. They have got a big pack and it will be a tough test,” said Knott.

“It’s always difficult going away from home anywhere. Most teams tend to win their home games and then it’s about seeing whatever you can get when you go away.

“They are eighth in the league, so are not a bad side by any means.

“We had a few missing last week but I think we should have a full squad this weekend, so that should really help us out.”
