WAYNE Kibble says that it was an honour to take charge of a Wiltshire League representative team last weekend but is hoping that the league give themselves a better chance of being competitive in the future.

Assisted by league development officer Stef Kuczynski, Kibble selected a side to take on the Hampshire Premier League in the preliminary round of the FA Inter-League Cup at Malmesbury Victoria’s Flying Monk Ground on Saturday.

The competition has been running since 2003 and winners go on to represent the country in the UEFA Regions Cup.

But with sides in the Wiltshire League still taking part in fixtures last weekend, preparation was far from straightforward for Kibble’s team and a side made up of players from Malmesbury, Wilts Calne Town, FC Chippenham Youth and Wootton Bassett Development were beaten 4-0.

“The competition goes on for about two years at a time and it was good to be asked to take a side but I don’t think we showed the best of the Wiltshire League,” said Malmesbury manager Kibble. “We had a few weeks to pick a side and the first time we met was 2pm on Saturday, and then we had to figure out where was best to play everyone and things like that.

“Hampshire had played together already and turned up with a really strong side but the Wiltshire League had a league programme on Saturday and teams didn’t want to release their best players, which is understandable.

“It’s a shame but I spoke to the league officials about my ideas on Saturday and hopefully we can prepare better next time.”

In the Premier Division, Supermarine Sports’ record has been expunged after they resigned from the league while Wroughton beat high-flying Ludgershall Sports 2-1.

Southbrook were beaten 3-2 by Corsham Town Reserves while Vale of Pewsey and Calne drew 1-1.
