JOHN Fisher was delighted to see his Highworth Town players receive some tangible reward for their efforts this season after they became the kings of the county last night.

The Hellenic League Worthians have had a dramatic campaign that they won’t forget in a hurry after reaching the semi-finals of the FA Vase but on Wednesday evening, they brought the curtain down on their efforts by getting their hands on the Wiltshire Senior Cup.

Two second-half strikes from Ryan King and Dan Drewett were enough to see off Western League Bradford Town at Hardenhuish Park in Chippenham, with Premier League referee Lee Probert, guesting for his local FA, sending off Bradford’s Steve Hulbert with more than half an hour to go.

“If we hadn’t got anything, the season wouldn’t have meant nothing. It meant a lot of things but losers aren’t remembered for nothing, are they?” said Highworth manager Fisher.

“I’m just pleased for all of the players that worked hard and the committee and everything. Now we can all have a drink Saturday night and make it even better.

“We should have made it easier than it was but fair play to them - when they went down to 10 men, they gave it a serious go and didn’t hold back.

“I’m pleased for the players. They deserve it.

“They deserved to get something from the season because if they hadn’t, everybody would have said: ‘yeah, you did all this but you didn’t win anything’.

“Now we can say: ‘we got to the semi-finals of the Vase and we have won the Wilts Senior Cup’.

“Onwards and upwards and next year’s the league. That’s the main thing we’re going to strive for – it’s got to be the league next year.

“With the squad we’ve got, with a couple of additions, that’s got to be our aim.”

Gary Stevens saved well from Bradford’s Sam Jordan in a cagey first period before the Worthians took the lead just a few minutes after the break, with King lashing home a fine strike from the edge of the area.

The Western League challengers then had Hulbert sent off for a challenge on goalscorer King but his dismissal rallied the men in blue and they got back on level terms when Niekell Plummer squeezed in a rasping low shot, which just beat Stevens at his near post.

But the Worthians put one hand on the trophy when substitute Nathan Blackford clipped a ball into the area and fellow winger Drewett arrowed a superb effort into the bottom corner to make it 2-1.

Both teams had further chances to score, Bradford’s Plummer and Martin Johnson drawing saves from Stevens whilst TJ Bohane and King went close but Fisher’s troops emerged victorious.
