NEW captain Aaron Lee is looking forward to the challenge of heading Purton’s latest title charge, even if he now has a weekly to-do list the length of his arm.

Long-serving bowler Lee was voted in as the villagers’ new skipper during the closed season, coming in to replace Elliott Hill, who opted to hand over the reins to concentrate on playing for villagers.

Purton finished second in the Wiltshire Division last term and Lee says that his ambition is to lead his team to the title, even if it leaves him spinning plates.

“I’m used to walking up, bowling, turning around and repeating – now I’ve got 101 things to do,” said the Purton captain.

“Elliott decided that he wanted to concentrate on playing. I got voted in at a meeting and that was it.

“It’s something I’ve never done before but I’ve been involved in this kind of thing with university teams in the past, so I know what it’s all about.

“It’s a lot different being captain because you spend a lot of time baby-sitting, hand-holding and nagging.

“But I’ve got people like Elliott and Mark Gardner (club captain) to help me, as well as Tom Bowler – that’s two ex-captains and an ex-minor counties cricketer.

“We want to try and win the league. But finishing second or third would still be a successful season for us.

“And we don’t know what’s going to happen next year when the restructuring of the leagues happens.”

Purton have brought in Shantosh Iyengar from Swindon and Lee says that the club are still working on securing an overseas signing.

He added: “We had two overseas guys sorted out, only for them to fall through because they signed for teams in the IPL (Indian Premier League) – I guess playing for Dehli Daredevils is more lucrative than playing for Purton cricket club.”
