ROYAL Wootton Bassett are looking to go one better this season as they look to sign off from Rylands Way in style.

Bassett were left disappointed last season as they finished runners-up to Malmesbury, but with the prospect of a move to a new ground at the Wootton Bassett Sporting Hub, captain Darren Beasant is hoping for something special to mark the end of an era for the club.

“It is quite a big year for us in many ways because it is the last year at the current ground and there will be a league restructure at the end of the season for the entire south west of England,” he said.

“It is quite a significant year for us in terms of achieving what we want to on the field and that translating into being able to play at the standard of cricket that we would want to at the new ground.

“We were runners up last year and we need to get over the disappointment of that pretty quickly and we need to recognise the season starts again.

In a bid to clinch the Wiltshire Cricket League Division One title Bassett have brought in spin bowler Asanka Vithanage from Lechlade and Dan Ellis, who has been with WEPL Premier Two side Goatacre., available to them for the whole summer.

“We are expecting Asanka to make a real difference,” added Beasant.

“He is a really talented off-spinner and gives it a whack with the bat as well.

“He was a stand-out performer at Swindon and was part of a title winning Lechlade side, who play two tiers above where we are playing.

“Other than that we have managed to keep everybody and we have a lad, Dan Ellis, who is available to us every week, so having him will be like having a new signing.

“We are quite young side, so we are a little bit prone to inconsistency and maybe not responding the way we should when we get put under pressure.

“If we can learn how to do that then I would like to see us win the league.”
