PURTON got a much-needed confidence boost with a 63-run win over fellow challengers Westbury.

Having won the toss the hosts put Purton into bat and it proved to be a mistake as Aaron Lee’s side racked up an unassailable 237-6.

Tom Bowler (55) top scored for the visitors as every batsman contributed well to the total.

Purton then proceeded to take wickets at regular intervals, with Tom Bowler (4-28) again the pick of the bowlers as Westbury were bowled out well short of their target with four overs remaining.

“They put us in and we were a little bit lacking in confidence from the week before, but I can’t complain at all with how we batted,” said Lee “I think everyone scored runs and everyone contributed so it was a fantastic effort.

“They have a very strong opening bowling attack so we did very well there to only lose one wicket in the first 20 overs.

“The run-rate was pretty slow because they bowled so well but we made it up in the later overs.

“I was very confident with the target we set, but you never know really because it was a good wicket and I would say it was about par, maybe a little bit under.

“I think we bowled really well in the second innings as well, so all around it was a fantastic team effort.

“I think it is going to be a pretty funny season.

“Everyone is capable of beating everybody else.

“We have just got to make sure that we keep this momentum going now going into next week, because there are not going to be any easy fixtures.

“We need to work really hard, but I was over the moon with how the guys did.”

Meanwhile, Marlborough won a low-scoring encounter with their local rivals Devizes on Saturday by the narrowest of margins, one wicket.

The hosts won the toss and chose to bat and were soon in trouble as George Fox (4-11) ripped through the top order before Will Langton (3-16) restricted Devizes to just 86 all out.

Marlborough got off to a steady start in reply, with Tom Palmer taking control and they seemed to be coasting to a comfortable win at 57-2 when the Marlborough collapse began.

With the scores tied Langton and Dave West scampered for a close run single to secure the victory.
