ENGLAND star Mike Brown believes Swindon’s Jonny May can reclaim a spot on the wing in time for the World Cup.

May has 13 England caps to his name but lost his place in the side during the SIx Nations and with the likes of Marland Yarde, Jack Nowell, Chris Ashton and Christian Wade also in contention for selection, May has his work cut out.

However, Brown believes May has all the ability to make a starting berth in Stuart Lancaster’s side his own again after standout performances for England against the world champion All Blacks last autumn.

“He is a very good player and I think he has shown that at times throughout the season,” said Brown, speaking as Land Rover unveiled an official Rugby World Cup mascot as part of their ‘We Deal In Real’ campaign that aims to put grassroots rugby on the global stage.

“You saw what he was capable of when the All Blacks stood off him and that is the ability he has.

“But there is plenty of competition for him so it’s going to be an interesting battle. There is so much strength in depth so no one is guaranteed a spot.”

For Brown it has been a mixed campaign as injury scuppered his chance to help Harlequins during the back end of the season.

However, he is raring to go ahead of the World Cup and is desperate to lift the trophy on home soil – something he knows May can help out with.

“Personally I feel like I have a really good season and I am happy with the levels I have been playing at,” said Brown.

“Obviously there have been disappointments and you look at the Six Nations and there was no doubt that we wanted to win it.

“I think we are in great shape for the tournament and our objective is simple, we want to win the World Cup “We are on home soil so it will be an amazing experience and one that we can’t let pass us by.

“It would mean the absolute world to me to play at a World Cup on home soil and it would be out of this world to play in a final at Twickenham.

“It doesn’t get any better than that and winning the World Cup on home soil would be an absolute dream come true.”
