ROYAL Wootton Bassett Academy lost 5-3 to Summerhill School, from Dudley, in the final of the English Schools’ FA Under 13 PlayStation Schools’ Cup last week.

Staged at Reading’s Madejski Stadium, Bassett were cheered on by a convoy of seven coaches of supporters but came up short in an end-to-end contest, falling behind after just 10 minutes as Ben Cassidy opened the scoring for Summerhill.

Bassett, led by Academy head of PE David Thatcher, levelled the scores after a looping free-kick struck the crossbar and Jude Collins bundled in from inside the six-yard box.

Cassidy again powered home after some sustained pressure, but Owen Windsor levelled again for Bassett with a left-footed finish.

Ryan Grosvenor and Cassidy, for his hat-trick, scored either side of half-time to put the Midlands side in the clear.

But Bassett’s Rhys Wells curled a superb shot into the top corner beyond goalkeeper Tom Slater from 25 yards.

But as Bassett chased the leveller, Grosvenor ran through and added a fifth for Summerhill.

The final was part of the PlayStation Schools’ Cup Festival, which was the culmination of another season of the exciting grassroots partnership between PlayStation and the ESFA.

Bassett squad: Prav Chahal, Ben Evans, Zac Skinner, Rhys Wells, Joe Price, Max Sockett, Connor Butler, Jordan Murray, Jude Collins, Owen Windsor, James Young, Kyle Scott, Dylan Grother, Will Kendrick, Luke Godwin.
