ANDY Staff says putting the faith in youth is the right way to go for Swindon.

Staff’s side have endured fluctuating fortunes so far in 2015, with seven wins and six defeats from their league fixtures so far.

Swindon were put to the sword when they took on title-chasing Warminster last weekend, falling to an emphatic 280-run defeat.

Although skipper Staff is keen for Swindon not to dwell on that loss, as they prepare to take on league leaders Chippenham at the County Ground on Saturday, it will still act as good character building for his young side.

“We have to put that behind us and move on,” said Staff, whose side are now fourth from bottom in the table.

“It’s an up-and-down league. If you lose one game you drop a few places. The top two sides lost last week too, that’s the sort of league it is.

“There are some good cricketers and good teams in this league. We have no overseas player but are still doing pretty well.

“We’ve given some young guys the chance to play cricket. The likes of Conor Cleary and Tom Codling are only 17 and 18 but they have come in and open the bowling and certainly do a great job.

“We have been happy with the way we have gone this season. We would like to have had a bit more consistency but that comes with having a young side.

“When we are good, we are very good but when we aren’t we do tend to struggle.”

Swindon have claimed plenty of fine results so far this term, including felling Rockhampton when they topped the table at the start of the month.

That has given Staff the belief that Swindon are capable of toppling leaders Chippenham this weekend, while the fact they are only seven points shy of a place in the top four is extra motivation.

“We got beaten by them earlier in the season so we would like to think we can show them we are a lot better than that game,” said Staff.

“With one win we could go from seventh to fourth so there is still lots to play for.

“Our main objective is to get into that new league restructure and we probably only have to win two of the next five to do that, but of course we will be looking to do more.”
