TOWN’S successful start to the season continued last weekend as the two guys who are making the headlines worked together to seal the points at Roots Hall.

Nathan Byrne’s progression at Swindon Town has been a real success story for the current regime.

When he took to the field on his debut as a second-half substitute replacing Nathan Thompson in a 1-1 home draw with Oldham in March 2013, he was a defender who looked dangerous going forward, but looked vulnerable when having to defend.

The next campaign he was given the freedom to attack as a wing-back, aiming to hurt the opposition with his pace and trickery on the ball.

That progression has led him to becoming one of the best attacking midfielders outside the top two divisions and something he owes a lot to the management team for. He would not be as coveted now if he was left as a fullback.

Inevitably, like all success stories at Town, he will move on, whether it’s Huddersfield, Burnley or QPR who stump up what is hopefully close to £1million Ideally, Town would reject any approach for Byrne and tell the player he will be allowed to leave in January, first helping the club to get on track for a top-six finish and help his replacement Jordan Stewart get used to life in the Football League.

That way Byrne gets his wish of a bigger move in a few months and Town will receive a transfer fee instead of him leaving on a free next summer.

With the almighty wallet running the game, I doubt he will be a Town player by the end of the window.

The encouraging form of Fabien Robert could placate the creativity lost Byrne’s departure.

After his impressive showing in pre-season, signing the 26-year-old was a real no-brainer for the Town chairman, and despite a shaky home league debut against Bradford, he’s looked comfortable in a number of positions since his arrival.

It’ll be interesting to see how he copes when the season hits winter and he needs to produce the goods on a terrible pitch away from the County Ground.
