DAVE Webb was delighted with Swindon Supermarine’s defensive solidarity as they picked up a point at play-off rivals Taunton Town on Saturday.

Marine kept their push for a top-five place motoring along as they played out a goalless draw with the Peacocks at Wordsworth Drive and manager Webb went out of his way top heap praise on central defensive duo Ross Adams and Ash Taylor, who he thought ‘died’ for their team in Somerset.

By the end of the afternoon, the Webb’s Wood Stadium boss was left wondering whether his team could have dispatched Taunton and returned to Swindon with all three points under their belt but was nonetheless left to reflect on a positive result.

“If you go to Taunton and come back with something, you’ve done very well,” said Webb.

“It was a game between two good sides. They’re a club with good players, a good manager and good facilities and they’re a club going in the right direction, just like we are at Supermarine.

“At the end of the day, you come away wondering whether you could have got the win because both sides had chances but we were playing down the slope in the second half and if one of those chances had gone in; I would have still settled for a point though.

“I thought we were excellent defensively.

“Ross Adams and Ash Taylor are an exciting partnership – Ross with his experience and Ash loves to defend – and they died for the team.

“The whole defence died for the team and that’s what you love to see.”

Saturday’s draw leaves Marine seventh in the Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West table, a point behind sixth-placed Bishops Cleeve but with two matches in hand.

Next weekend, Webb’s troops welcome in-form Banbury United to the Webb’s Wood Stadium and the Marine boss is eyeing up another testing clash.

Webb said: “Banbury won again on Saturday. They’re the form team and I’m sure they’ll be looking forward to coming to us.

“But we’re going to be at the Webb’s Wood and we’ve got to be looking for three points to push us up the table.”

Striker Ashley Edenborough suffered a heavy cut on the back of his head early on during Saturday’s goalless stalemate with Taunton but is expected to recover in time for Saturday’s game against Banbury.
