MARK Collier is daring to dream that this maybe Chippenham Town’s year after his side returned to the summit of the Southern League Premier Division.

With Poole Town’s match at Redditch United postponed due to a waterlogged Valley pitch, the Bluebirds made the journey back to Norfolk even longer for King’s Lynn Town as they ran out 4-1 winners at Hardenhuish Park.

Top-scorer Andy Sandell gave the hosts the lead in the 37th minute after being played in by Alex Ferguson.

Veteran striker Alan Griffin showed his poachers insticts 10 minutes into the half when he pounced on Greg Tindle’s ricoheted effort to make it 2-0.

However, the Linnets pulled a goal back through Lee Stevenson before a Sandell 25 yard volley restored Chippenham’s two-goal advantage.

Ollie Taylor then put the gloss on another fine performance for Collier’s men with the fourth on 86 minute.

Chippenham now hold a slender one-point lead at the summit, but they have played two goals more than Poole.

“We could not be in a better place,” Collier said. “We are in a great position, top of the league going into February.

“That is is great for everyone involved with Chippenham Town - the spirit at the moment is fantastic.

“Why not dream, someone has to win the league. Teams will be fearing us with how we are playing and the goals that we are scoring.

“But I am very mindful that there are still a lot of games to be played. We have had a great 31 games so far, the next 15 are big ones.

“Our form in January has been outstanding. We have had to make a few changes, I’m not sure that it was a 4-1 result, but we scored our goals at the right time and we are playing with a lot of confidence at the moment.

“We started the season well. We’ve been in the top four or five throughout September, October and now we going into February top of the table, scoring goals and keeping it tight at the back – it is a great time to be a Chippenham Town supporter.”

With Chippenham sitting pretty at the top, Collier knows that his side cannot afford to let up as they look to gain promotion to the National Leagues.

The Bluebirds have a nine-point cushion between themselves and fifth place Redditch, who occupy the final play-off place.

“That is the issue now (how we stay top),” Collier said.

“We have got 15 games left. How many points do you need to finish in the playoff places? How many do you need to win it? Who knows.

“What we have to do is keep winning games of football and see how far it will take us.

“We have got 15 games left and if we lose 10 of them then we will finish eighth or ninth, no-one wants that.

“With the form we are in, the goals we are scoring we just have to keep going.”
