ED Young was thrilled to bring the Midas touch in his first match as Wiltshire skipper as the county finally broke their Unicorns Championship Western Division duck with victory over Wales.

Former Gloucestershire all-rounder Young, who has taken over the reins of the three-day team following the retirement from the longer form of the game of Mike Coles last month, guided the home side to a 70-run triumph at South Wilts CC on Tuesday.

Jake Lintott claimed 5-52 to wrap up victory, while and Corsham debutant James Arney contributed six wickets across Wales’ two innings as the visitors were stopped short chasing 385 to win.

“It’s great to get a win,” Young said.

“A three-day win is always fantastic as you have to work so hard to get them.

“We haven’t had the results we have wanted so far this year but I think right now is a great time for Wiltshire cricket.”

“We’ve got a lot of young players in our set-up and they’ve come in and taken their chance against Wales.

“In the next two games (Herefordshire away and Shropshire at home) we will continue to give those guys game time and it will put us in a great position for the future.”

Young saluted the efforts of both Arney and Lintott, the latter also hitting 92 in Wiltshire’s second innings to help set Wales’ their imposing winning target and securing the man of the match award.

The skipper added: “Personally, it’s a great way to start as captain and I’m really happy with the way the team performed.

“In the first innings, James Arney bowled really well and getting us into lead of 100-plus was a huge effort and made a big difference when it came to the second innings.

“It meant we could declare earlier and have more time to bowl them out.”

“Jake Lintott bowled excellently in the second innings and he has been a really consistent player for us for a while now.

“He scored 90-odd in our second innings too and he has been close to a century a couple of times now and I’m sure it will come sooner rather than later because he is such a good player.”
