LECHLADE head into tomorrow’s clash with basement boys Warminster knowing a win will secure them the league crown.

There will be no need for calculators, no need to keep an eye on what is going on elsewhere, the equation for Freddie Martin’s men is simple – victory equals title.

Last weekend’s success at second-placed Cheltenham has given the Manor Ground side a 30-point lead at the summit of Premier Two Glos/Wilts with two games remaining – including tomorrow’s visit of Warminster.

As they stand on the cusp of joining the West of England Premier League’s top flight, Joe Breet, last season’s skipper, believes this Lechlade team is the best he has played in.

“I have been here for four years now and this is the stand-out side that the club have had during my time here,” Breet said.

“The fear factor for these players, we have got such a low average age of the squad, is not there – they have not been scarred by previous seasons.”

But this Lechlade side have been enjoying a superb four-year cycle. In 2012, the Manor Ground men were still plying their trade in the old Wiltshire Division.

That year, Lechlade were crowned champions and moved into the Glos/Wilts Division for the 2013 campaign.

After a season of consolidation, the squad were celebrating once more in 2014 as they lifted the title once more.

With the West of England Premier League planning a restructure for this 2016 campaign, Lechlade went into their only Premier Two season knowing that they needed to finish in the higher echelons of the table or face demotion.

Last season, Breet and his teammates finished sixth and ensured that they would remain in the restructured Premier Two Glos/Wilts Division.

With a change at the top, coach Luke Sellers had departed for Cheltenham and young Martin taking over the reins from Breet, this campaign has gone beyond all pre-season expectations given the transition the club went through over the winter.

While Lechlade will be expecting a comfortable victory tomorrow in their bid for the title, Breet insists that they cannot take anything for granted.

“You have to say that we are favourites to win,” the opening batsman said. “But you can’t rest on your laurels.

“We will be going all out there on Saturday to get the win and that will be enough for us to get the title.”
