SWINDON Supermarine manager Dave Webb could not help but vent his frustration after their game against Shortwood United was postponed today because of the weather.

Webb’s team, who were looking to extend their unbeaten run as well as build on their momentum ahead of Monday’s game against North Leigh.

“It’s quite bizarre really, we are still in August and we’ve had a downpour, a bit of lightning and the referee has deemed the pitch as dangerous,” said the Marine manager.

“I don’t get it, both teams and managers were desperate to play - everyone who has come to today wants to watch a game of football.”

After a heavy downpour in the lead-up to the game, uncertainty soon swept over the Webb’s Wood Stadium.

Three o’clock came and went as the officials continued to inspect the pitch and after a 10-minute delay to see if conditions improved, referee Marcus Carmichael was convinced that the pitch was unplayable and decided to call the game off.

“The pitch is in fantastic nick and there is an area now where the ball does bounce and that was the reason the referee wouldn’t play,” added Webb.

“We asked if he would wait until quarter to four but he wouldn’t. It’s frustrating, we’ve started well - there is nothing worse as a footballer or a manager.

“It’s disappointing because we were hoping to keep everything ticking over. Thankfully we only have to wait until Monday to play.

“We wanted to keep it going and finish off a great August but that has been ruined by what, in my view, is the wrong decision.”

Supermarine don’t have to wait long until they are back in action as they will now turn their attention to Monday’s away trip to North Leigh.
