DEVIZES' disappointing start to the season continued at the weekend as they fell to a 16-13 home defeat to Walcot.

The London Road men began their Southern Counties South clash well with an early Andy Thompson penalty putting them in front after a series of strong carries from Ross Burton and Toby Randall.

Walcot replied with a penalty of their own before taking the lead on the half hour mark as they powered through the Saddlebacks defence to score a converted try.

Devizes were then reduced to 14 men for 10 minutes when Craig Bryant was sent to the sin bin for illegally slowing down the ball.

Walcot were looking strong on the counter and went further ahead with a second penalty, but Thompson reduced the arrears to 13-6 with his second three-pointer.

After a number of penalty offences, Devizes were lucky not to have a second sent to the bin before Walcot stretched their advantage to 16-6 with a drop goal.

Devizes had their best spell in the match during the final quarter with Rory Brown causing Walcot plenty of problems.

However, the hosts had to wait until the 78th minute to cross the whitewash when Brown went on jinking run and, after a couple of offloads, the ball was worked to Luke Rapson to touch down. Thompson added the conversion.

Seventeen-year-old James Clancy made it a debut to remember for Marlborough, bagging a try as his team ran out 15-3 winners over Sherborne.

Russell Westcott crossed for the hosts' other try, while Garth Bari added a conversion and a penalty to wrap up the win.
