GARETH Davies’ Fairford Town continued their fine start to the season recording their eighth win on the spin this weekend.

Goals from Lee Smith, Jack Ellis and Josh Morse were enough to defeat Fleet Spurs 3-1 in the FA Vase second round qualifying.

“The pitch was a leveller to say the least, it wasn’t one of our best performances but I do think the pitch made it difficult,” said Davies “It wasn’t pretty at times, it was the case of going down there keeping things tight and when the chances popped up, take them.

“We must have spent 40 minutes getting used to the pitch, and then we went in 1-0 up at half time after Lee Smith tapped it in.

“The second half we started brighter, our keeper made one or two saves at the most in the whole game.

“If they (Fleet Spurs) were going to get anything from the game, it would’ve been what we gave them, apart from the penalty we gave away we did really well.

Davies thinks his team have got into an early habit of winning games.

“I think we have learned how to win, we are on a bit of a roll at the moment. Winning becomes a habit, it’s very much like losing,” added the Fairford manager.

Fairford, who are currently second in Hellenic League Division One West, will look to keep their run going on Saturday as they play Tytherington Rocks.

“Once you get two or three wins, the roll just keeps going we need to keep doing it and hopefully we will be alright,” added Davies.

Highworth Town were able to put their FA Cup defeat to Havant & Waterlooville behind them as they claimed a 4-0 win at Bashley.

A hat-trick from fit-again Ashley Edenborough, plus a goal from Kieron Gleed meant Jeff Roberts’ side saw off their hosts and booked their place in the next round of the competition.

New College were dumped out of the competition on Friday night, losing 4-0 at Toolstation League Premier Division leaders Melksham Town.

Matt Cosnett’s team will hope to do better in their next fixture which is away to Hook Norton next Saturday.

Rich Hunter’s Royal Wootton Bassett were also unable to progress as they lost 4-2 at home to Thame United.

The game started badly for the hosts as Hunter watched his side fall 2-0 down in the first half due to some lacklustre defending.

In-form Steve Robertson then got Bassett back on the comeback trail when he tapped home Sam Packer’s cross.

With it 2-1 at the break, the next goal was crucial and, sadly for Bassett, it was the visitors who got it to make it 3-1.

Steve Yeardley then renewed hope of a comeback when he scored a half-volley with his first touch off of the substitutes’ bench.

But any hope was then crushed as the visitors when Lynton Goss got his second of the game to make it 4-2 at full time.

Hunter’s men will look to turn things around when they return to league action on Tuesday at Lydney Town.
