MELKSHAM Town A have to wait until Wednesday evening before beginning the defence of the Chanty Digital-sponsored Knockout Cup which they won last April when they beat Warminster Town Reserves 1-0.

But this season’s competition kicked off under the lights at Meadow Lane on Friday evening when Westbury United Reserves took on Zeals FC.

The match which was scheduled for Zeals was switched to Meadow Lane as the villagers home pitch is still not ready after its summer overhaul.

That was as far as Westbury's generosity went as Mark Lanfear’s side claimed a comfortable 6-0 win to book their place in the second round.

Nick Taylor's goal for Westbury separated the sides at the break and Martyn Marsh, Josh Wozinak, James Cox all scored before Adam Kenich saw his blushes saved when his awful touch in front of goal was turned into his own net by Steve Wyatt.

It was left to Taylor to finish things off with his second and Westbury’s sixth of the night.

The all-second division affair between Aces FC and Trowbridge Town A went the way of the latter who are enjoying a good start to life in the league under manager Bob Arberry, who could actually watch his team’s 3-2 win from the sideline rather than in his usual position of goalkeeper.

Trowbridge twice led through goals from Mike Ritson, whose excellent free kick gave them the lead, and Tony McElhone, but on each occasion goals from Dan Hatcher got Aces on level terms.

Had Andy Rhead not missed a penalty for Aces they could have gone in at half time 3-2 ahead.

With the tie heading towards extra time Tom Caldicott drilled home the 87th minute winner for Trowbridge.

Warminster Town A made the short trip to near-neighbours Heytesbury for their first ever Knockout Cup tie.

The villagers, who suffered a 10-0 defeat at Freshford last weekend, proved too strong for their second division guests as a 4-1 victory saw them book their place in the next round.

Heytesbury’s opening goal on 17 minutes owed much to the efforts of both Wayne Marshman and Ollie Nash who combined well before setting up Leigh Kennedy, who gave the move the finish it deserved.

Nash then ran from the halfway line to double the lead in the 27th minute but Warminster were given a lifeline on the stoke of half time when Liam Gibbens scored from the penalty spot.

Nash then made it 3-1 on 51 minutes, as an excellent ball over the top from Kennedy fell to him to fire home his second of the afternoon.

A great save from Heytesbury’s keeper Sam Spratt kept the two-goal cushion intact ahead of Kennedy making it 4-1 when he turned in a Bradley Edwards cross three minutes from time.

Three goals in the final 15 minutes saw second division Calne Eagles, playing their first game since the tragic death of talisman defender Ned Edney, come from a goal down to claim a 3-1 victory at first division Hilperton United.

Prior to the tie at Whaddon Lane both teams held a minute silence in memory of Edney, who passed away on September 13.

After a goalless first half Calne fell behind to a Reuben Spong goal and only Eagles keeper Andy Windsor denied Spong and Nathan Glass from adding to that score.

The introduction of substitute Max Wyatt tuned the tie on its head. Firstly he set up Mickey Taraskevics for the equaliser and then his slide-rule pass found Taraskevics who put Eagles in front.

With four minutes remaining keeper Windsor denied Spong an equaliser before Wyatt capped an impressive debut with a superb individual goal to clinch a welcome 3-1 win.

The tie of the round was undoubtedly the fixture at West Lavington where second division leaders Three Daggers welcomed first division Potterne.

In a wind-assisted match it was the latter who finally prevailed as they came from 2-1 down to seal a 3-2 win.

Doug Dickson, on his Potterne debut, lashed home a 30 yard free kick to give the villagers the lead.

Phil Hampson, who had earlier missed three sitters for the hosts, levelled matterd when he finished well after a great pass from Mark Young but Potterne regained the lead when Tom Lye scored directly from a corner to put the villager 2-1 up at half time.

Three Daggers, playing with the advantage of the wind in the second half, squared things up via a Joe Moloney effort and it was Maloney who netted the winner when he shinned the ball in from 18 yards.

Semington Magpies may not have won any of their opening three Division One fixtures, but Bobby Mitchell’s side would have been favourites for cup glory when they travelled to second division Trowbridge Wanderers Development.

After a nervy first half that saw them lead 1-0, they came good against a spirited and battling Wanderers out to claim a 4-0 success.

Magpies' Chris Berrelly saw his inswinging cross turned in by a Wanderers player to give his team the half-time lead.

After the break Rich Allum, on his return from injury, doubled the lead with a calm finish and he made it 3-0 as he slotted the ball into the top corner for his second.

The scoring was completed by player/manager Mitchell.
