WESTBURY United manager James Goddard was happy with the reaction from his side as they bounced back from defeat with a 1-0 win over Bishop Sutton on Tuesday night.

George Bendle’s first-half effort was enough to earn all three points for the visitors, who are now 13th in the Toolstation League First Division.

“It was a good performance away from home. I think we were by far the better side in the first half,” said United chief Goddard.

“We probably should have been more than one goal up because we played really well and dominated the ball.

“To be fair, they looked a very good side in the second half. We had to dig in and defend very well for the last 20 minutes.

“The first half was pleasing and in the second half, the back four played very well so it was good to get the clean sheet and the result.

“Our problem last year was we conceded way too many goals but this year, we have been defensively solid.”

The victory came after Westbury suffered a disappointing 5-3 defeat to promotion-chasing Wellington.

But manager Goddard wasn’t too concerned with the weekend result and is happy with how his team have started the season.

“Wellington at the weekend was a tough one. I don’t think many teams will go there and win or get anything from the game because they’re a very good side going forward,” added Goddard.

“We gave it a good go in the second half against them, but I’d expect them to be challenging high up the table.

“In the next month or so, we will have a clearer picture of where we should be looking to compete “If you look at our points this season, we are only nine off of what we achieved for the whole of last season.”

Goals from Ben Pring and Lewis Russell weren’t enough to earn Corsham Town a win as they drew 2-2 with Bishops Lydeard on Saturday.

Warminster Town were 2-1 winners away at bottom-of-the-league Almondsbury UWE, Sam Clift and Tom Welch notching.
