RICH Hunter’s Royal Wootton Bassett were able to put an end to their winless streak as they drew 1-1 away to Brimscombe & Thrupp.

The result comes as a welcome relief for Hunter, who had watched his side lose their last three games.

The opening 45 minutes were uneventful as it was goalless at the interval before the game burst into life just past the hour mark.

Dan Bailey put the visitors in the lead after he did well to control Sam Packer’s clever lay off, before steering his shot past Lewis Skyers in the home goal.

However, their lead wouldn’t last long as the hosts were able to hit back immediately through Ben Prictor, who picked out the top corner with an outstanding strike.

Both teams then came close to grabbing a winner, Jack Smith headed narrowly wide for the hosts with 12 minutes to go, before Skyers produced a great save to deny Bailey his second at the other end .

“The first half was a very close game there were very few chances. The referee was actually pretty disappointing; it was the referee show for the first 45 minutes,” said Hunter.

“He was calling up fouls all the time and bringing the yellow card out a lot it was a very soft start.

“In the second half we got the breakthrough and then it really started to open up but they managed to equalise and then the game was end to end.

“Overall it was an even game, both teams had chances to go and win the game. I think we were the better team but unfortunately, we couldn’t nick that winner.”

Hunter’s side are now 11th in the Hellenic Premier Division and will return to action next Wednesday when they host Woodley United in their Hellenic League Floodlit Cup game.

Elsewhere, in the Sydenhams League Division One, Pewsey Vale were on the end of a 4-0 drubbing as they lost away to Folland Sports.
