SWINDON Shock suffered mixed fortunes in this weekend’s double-header as they claimed a league win over Southampton Sharks but lost to Oxford Brookes in the National Shield.

Saturday saw David Colclough’s side register their third successive win in the South West Division Four of the National Basketball League after a dominant 76-73 home win over the Southampton Sharks.

Spencer Wells was the leading scorer for the third week in a row, claiming an impressive total of 24 points.

After taking an early lead, Mantas Kmita sealed the win with some accurate shooting from the three-point line to put the hosts 19 points clear going into the fourth.

Less than 24 hours later, Shock would have to get back on the court to face South West Division Three side Oxford Brookes in the National Shield.

Despite taking an early lead, it was Oxford who would be triumphant as they came on strong in the second half of the game to snatch a one-point win in the last 20 seconds of the game.

“It was a good weekend, but a troublesome loss right at the end. It was nice to play at home and not have to worry about all the travelling,” said player-coach Colclough.

“When you play double-headers, you’re a bit worn down, so even though they were both at home, we were flat for the second game.

“I think we played better in the second game just because they were in the level above, but with Southampton, it wasn’t a struggle for us.

“They (Southampton) were a young team, so we just watched them fall apart. The pressure just got to them and we just took off.

“The Sunday; it was a big challenge. We actually had a one-point lead in the final quarter but we forgot to move, which left one of their guys wide open and he made his shot.

“I think legs got to us. We put all of our energy into the league game before and we were also without our leading scorer Spencer Wells.”

Swindon Shock now only have league action to worry about and are back on the road at the weekend at Woking Blackhawk Flyers.
