SWINDON Robins new boy Emil Grondal plans to pick the brains of a former Abbey Stadium favourite in a bid to give himself the best chance of success next season.

The 21-year-old Dane was announced as a member of Alun Rossiter’s 2017 Swindon septet earlier this week but admits that he needs to make himself familiar with the Robins’ old track as quickly as possible, despite the new stadium expected to be ready later in the season.

To that end, Grondal, who will also be riding for two teams in Denmark next season and is also in negotiations with a Polish outfit, will try to garner a few tips from countryman Peter Kildemand, who was part of Swindon’s 2012 Elite League-winning line-up.

“I haven’t ever raced on the track. I have been down a couple of times, so I just need to get all the information I can before the season gets going,” said former Peterborough Panthers man Grondal.

“It’s just make the gate and go left at the end of the turn, so hopefully we can make it that simple and score some points.

“I know Peter (Kildemand) very well. I have raced against him many times in Denmark.

“He is a really nice guy so for sure, I am going to give him a ring to see if he has any tips that might help me. If I can do half as good as him, it will be perfect.

“One of my engine tuners, Brian Karger, from Denmark, is also a bit of a legend down in Swindon.

“He does all my engines both in Denmark and England, so for sure I can get some tips and information from him as well.

“He knows the track very well. It’s a bit different when you have people around you who know the facilities and know the tracks and know what to do before you come there, so that’s a big advantage, I think.”

Grondal is also looking forward to picking up as much as possible from working with a man who came agonisingly close to becoming world champion last term – Robins captain Jason Doyle.

He said: “He (Jason Doyle) is a really, really good rider. I have watched him race many, many times and I think I can learn a lot from him.

“For sure, it is going to be cool to race with him in Swindon and I am just looking forward to meeting all the guys, and hopefully we can fight for trophies – that’s the goal.

“They have signed some really good riders, so I think we have a strong team.

“Jason is an amazing character. He knows a lot about the track at Swindon and how to race the different lines. I will try to stay close to him and learn all I can.”
