AFTER winning gold at the Rio Paralympics, swimmer Aaron Moores has now set his sights on adding world championships success to his list of accolades.

The 22-year-old from Trowbridge picked up gold in the SB14 breaststroke whilst in Brazil this summer but he says that he isn’t done yet.

The Swansea-based swimmer told the Wiltshire Times that despite not having any plans set in stone, he has his eye on Budapest for next year’s World Championships, which take place in July. “Going to the World Championships next year is my next aim and becoming a world champion as well as a Paralympic champion,” said the swimmer.

“After that I’ll sit down with my coaches and make further plans for the next year because we do it from year-to-year as it is a bit more focussed.

“I’ve never been a world champion so it’s just as big as winning in Rio, I want to get that and be able to say I am a champion in both.”

After winning his gold with an impressive time of 1:06.67, Moores thinks he can still cut more off his time if he fine tunes his preparation.

He admits the fact he knows he can go faster is a huge lift as he bids to become a world and Paralympic champion.

“I know I can swim quicker which is more motivation. I’m just peaking now out of nowhere so I need to keep on going and see how quick I can go,” he added. “We are talking to GB now to try and make sure that everything is perfect next time.

“I think it was maybe the nerves and everything going on in my head.

“I know I could have swam quicker which makes me think I have more to come which is why I want to go to the worlds and do it properly.”

Following his impressive performance in the pool in South America, Moores has been rewarded by being put on British Para-Swimming’s top level of funding, the Podium programme.
