MARLBOROUGH put in an unconvincing performance but dug deep to defend well in their 13-11 Southern Counties South success over Bath side Walcot.

The Walcot pack had the upper hand in the scrums but the lack of good ball and the cold conditions meant that there was little flowing rugby.

Home centre Jamie Laing moved to fly-half and then scrum-half and showed his strength to dive over at the base of a ruck to get the home side's only try of the game.

Nathan Morgan converted and Garth Bari also kicked two penalties as Marlborough managed a second win in a row.

Devizes suffered their first league defeat since November 5, falling to a 26-8 loss at London Road against title-chasing Wimborne Missing several players, the Saddlebacks were up against it from the off as the visitors quickly settled playing down the slope.

Five minutes of incessant pressure brought their first try and, although Devizes came back into it, a second score took Wimborne further clear.

Devizes edged their way back into the game and were rewarded with a penalty from Rory Brown.

Improving their phase play after half-time, Devizes were nevertheless caught out by a third Wimborne score.

The home side responded when hooker John Angell found himself in an unfamiliar position out wide to dive over in the corner to make it 21-8.

Wimborne scored their bonus-point try on the full-time whistle.
