SWINDON’S South West One East renaissance continued as they overcame Reading 25-5 to pick up another win at the weekend.

Since the turn of the year, Sean Lynn’s side have claimed two wins as well as bonus points for narrow defeats to Newbury Blues and Old Patesians.

Before that, they had endured a torrid first half of the season, in which they only registered four victories.

Ollie Wilson, Jordan Sheppard, Josh Allen and Johnny Morrison were the scorers for Lynn’s men, much to the delight of skipper Mike Thompson, who isn’t surprised by the upturn in form.

“Since Christmas, it has turned around a bit and we started the year off against the higher end of the league,” he said.

“We have games with sides who are around us now and we have managed to maintain that performance, which is showing on the board.

“It’s what we needed and we just need to keep doing it. It’s massively important we pick up points from the teams around us because the bottom of the table is very tight.”

Despite the victory in Berkshire, Thompson believes there are still plenty of things for his team to build on.

With a few players out with injury, Thompson also praised the versatility of his team-mates as they navigated their way to a win. “Reading is always a hard place to go. It’s their little fortress but it was a good performance and the lads played really well,” he said.

“We were missing a few but as a team, we just did the basics well.

“There were still a few mistakes but it was a cold day and it was muddy. There is still lots to improve on but it was a good performance from the lads.

“It only takes a couple of injuries and you can find yourselves on the back foot, whereas at the moment, we have quite a good mix of boys.

“So if we have a few away, we can control it and put people in that position who can play just as well.”

Elsewhere in South West One East, Royal Wootton Bassett were the victims of a shut-out as they fell to an 18-0 defeat at Reading Abbey.
