DEVIZES Ladies concluded a standout season in South West North Two with a 30-15 success over Chew Valley Ladies that saw them confirmed as runners up behind county rivals Westbury.

Saturday's match saw Devizes' Denise Warbutton hit the 100-cap mark for the club, while taking her points tally to 140 in 14 games this season, while Jo Storm made her final appearance as a Devizes player.

In front of a large crowd at the Chivers Ground, Devizes started well as they rolled into the Chew half and set up the position from which their opponents infringed and Warbutton landed the penalty in windy conditions.

After winger Sian Stevens had been denied by a last-ditch tackle, captain Kate Stradling's surge took them forward again and scrum-half Warbutton and fly-half Alice Bowerbank created a short-side attack that sent Georgia Walker over for the try.

Chew hit back with a score from broken-field play and, as Devizes started to fall foul of the referee, a second try from a lineout rumble, gave the visitors the lead.

The response came as Stradling took a tap penalty and Fay A'Bear passed the ball on to centre Emily Pratt, who went around the defence for a score converted by Warbutton, who then added a further long-range penalty.

In the second half Chew worked their way back into it, adding a further try to cut the deficit to three points with 20 minutes to go.

With a grandstand finish in prospect, substitute Pippa Adamthwaite-Cook made two telling interventions, forcing the ball loose as Chew threatened a further score, then making a searing break down the wing to touch down for another try.

The victory was confirmed as Pratt again showed her pace to touch down and Emma Matthews added the conversion.
