HIGHWORTH Town manager Jeff Roberts admits he may be a little over-critical of his team after feeling they could have performed better in their 5-1 success at Ascot United.

Fresh off the back of their Wiltshire FA Senior Cup semi-final heroics against Southern League Division One South and West play-off hopefuls Salisbury, the Hellenic League Premier Division side were always in control of Saturday’s contest at the Racecourse Ground.

However, Roberts felt that his side could have done even better.

“I know what the ability of this squad is,” said Roberts. “We have got a lot of players who are Southern League quality and they have come to us from that level.

“We were a bit scrappy and maybe we were tired from Tuesday night, but we are better than what we showed on Saturday.

“Maybe I am over-critical, but it is OK doing it against the likes of Salisbury, and they did put out a strong team against us, on a one-off match basis.

“But we have been a little too inconsistent in our performances this season.

“It is good that we are starting to click again now and there is still a chance we can take something from this season as we are in two cups (the Worthians are also in the semi-finals of the Hellenic Challenge Cup).”

At Ascot, an own goal put Highworth on track to be first past the post before Aaron Ferris doubled the advantage.

Luke Wilson pulled a goal back for the hosts, while Ash Edenborough, Nathan Gambling and Aysa Corrick, who also missed a penalty, completed the scoring for the Elms outfit.

Meanwhile, Dan Bailey goal was not enough to prevent Royal Wootton Bassett from falling to a 2-1 defeat at bottom club Burnham.
