SWINDON Storm’s 45-0 win at home to Worcester Black Knights at Supermarine RFC on Saturday meant they set a new club record of five consecutive wins.

The SFC Two West run stretches back to the beginning of May when they defeated Jurassic Coast Raptors 40-6, after losing their opening two games.

However, since that first win, Storm have been able to record a succession of victories much to the delight of head coach Rich Van Sloten.

Greg Roscow, Adam Day and Phil Bardwell got the ball rolling in the first half to hand the hosts a 13-0 lead. That advantage was further extended when Roscow and Bardwell both doubled up, while Brent Johnson-Flippance, Dan Thorne and Rob Leaper also got on the scoresheet.

“In the first half, we were a little bit slow and then in the second half, we really got our heads together,” said Van Sloten.

“I just think sometimes, even though we controlled the ball, it didn’t really click for us.

“In the first half, everyone was thinking about getting five games on the trot because that is something Storm have never done.

“I said to the guys not to worry about it and just concentrate on winning the game, because I think it was hanging over everybody a little bit.

“But we made adjustments and credit to them for doing it because that paid dividends. Some teams can make them and some can’t.

“All in all, it was a very good team performance and we have (Bristol) Apache this weekend. It is a positive because offence had plenty of scores and defence had a shutout.”

The season so far has proved to be the opposite of last year’s campaign, where the club failed to register a win and Van Sloten believes a restored sense of a team ethic is the reason behind this year’s improvement.

“It was something Storm have never been able to do and we are doing it with a lot of rookies,” he added. “The seniors and the rookies have really come together and it is fantastic, especially at this time of year.

“Team ethic is something we have been missing for quite a while, there is no hierarchy and everyone is on the same page.

“The players are putting the work in, the coaches are putting the work in, it has been a real group effort this year. It’s totally a team environment this year which is what I wanted to instil.”
