SWINDON Robins made it three wins in five days in the SGB Premiership with a sensational come-from-behind success away at Leicester Lions tonight.

Alun Rossiter’s troops trailed by 11 points with four races to go at Beaumont Park but back-to-back maximums in Heats 12 and 13 began to turn the tide before another followed in stunning fashion in the final race to cap an unlikely win.

Swindon were still three points in arrears heading into the finale but with Nick Morris out in front, Tobiasz Musielak pulled off a sublime pass on Lions captain Danny King on the last lap to snatch the points for the visitors.

Musielak led the Robins’ points tally with a 15+1, while Morris (10+1) and guest Troy Batchelor (10) hit double figures too.

The visitors were helped by a spate of injuries to the home team, with Kyle Newman and Pawel Przedpelski both withdrawing after falls to go alongside the pre-meeting pull-out of Josh Bates to leave Leicester with just four riders by the time the meeting finished.

However, Rossiter does not think that should overshadow the heroic efforts of his team.

“They only finished with four riders but you’ve still got to beat what is in front of you,” said Rossiter.

“I thought I’d made a fatal mistake with not doing a tactical ride in Heat Nine because we’d just lost a third place in the previous race and I was a bit peeved about that but wow, what a response. Never right this team off.

“I think they made a mistake too as they should have gone into Heat 10 with no riders as that would have stopped me using the tactical. It’s swings and roundabouts.

“We started to get the momentum going and got a good 5-1 from the boys in Heats 12 and 13 and then Heat 15 was outstanding.

“I was really impressed with Tobiasz tonight. He was outstanding and that last minute dive on Danny King, I couldn’t believe it.

“I actually thought we were poor tonight but that was down to the track. You make your own luck in speedway and it was on our side tonight. We got away with it and still got the three points.”

Swindon got off to a winning start when guest Batchelor nailed the start in Heat One and although Bradley Wilson-Dean looked to be following nicely, Kim Nilsson was able to slip between the two.

The Lions roared back with a maximum in the next as Erik Riss led home Lasse Bjerre but Swindon responded with a 5-1 of their own in Heat Three. Musielak got a superb start and Leicester’s hopes of a shared heat were dashed as David Bellego picked off the home riders one by one, including a brilliant pass on Riss on the final bend.

However, the overall balance started to swing in the next as the home side made it two maximums in three races, with Bjerre triumphing ahead of King.

Leicester then began to turn the screw as victories for Przedpelski and Riss in Heats Five and Six saw them make it three wins in a row – and all with a heat advantage too.

The visitors were able to stop the rot in the seventh race when newcomer Musielak produced another storming ride to hold off the pressure of Bjerre but unfortunately for the Robins, even that contest ended with honours even.

That race win could not galvanise the visitors as Leicester claimed another 5-1 in the next despite a bold move from Wilson-Dean in the charge for the line off the final bend, with the Kiwi not quite able to squeeze between winner Riss and Bjerre.

A whole host of drama then unfolded in Heat Nine as first Swindon’s Adam Ellis went down – with his night ended by a shoulder injury – before Przedpelski was forced wide in the re-run by team-mate Riss, with the Pole catapulting hard into the air fence.

After a lengthy delay, Riss was disqualified and Bjerre nominated to ride in place of the injured Przedpelski as both teams were left with one rider apiece. The Robins could not capitalise, though, as Bjerre had the measure of Morris.

Swindon badly needed points and sent out Musielak on a tactical ride in Heat 10, with the Lions responding by selecting just one rider. However, that did not hurt them as Nilsson stepped up to the plate to romp clear.

The pattern continued in the next as King got a belter of a start to get away and clear, with Swindon's night seemingly summed up by Wilson-Dean’s fall when third, denying them a shared heat.

However, the pendulum began to swing Swindon’s way as injuries continued to restrict the home side and lone rider Bjerre was left at the mercy of Musielak and Zach Wajtknecht as the visitors took a priceless maximum in Heat 12.

An 11-point deficit then became three as the Robins made it back-to-back 5-1 wins. Batchelor blitzed to the first bend and Morris glided in behind to shut out Nilsson to keep their side in with a shout.

Leicester needed a response and reserve Riss was up the challenge in the penultimate race as despite being sent out alone, he showed all the composure in the world to hold off the brave efforts of Bellego to triumph and his side three points in front with one race to go.

The night’s drama was not done there, though, as Nilsson and Batchelor both went down in the charge to the first bend in the finale, with the home number one excluded for causing the collision.

That left King to go it alone against Morris and Musielak – who stepped in to replace the injured Batchelor – and he looked like doing just enough to thwart the Robins with a second-placed finish, only for Swindon’s Polish ace to pull off a stunning pass on the final lap of the night and send the visitors back to Wiltshire with what had seemed an impossible meeting victory.
