SWINDON St George crushed local rivals Oxford Cavaliers 54-8 in South West Rugby League West of England Pool Two.

Following on from their record-breaking win last weekend, where they swept Bath aside 84-4 at home, head coach Ben Whincup is delighted to see some consistency in performance.

Richard White, Lloyd Allen, Florin Palcau, Tucker Blinkhorn, Charles Burnett, Connor Tomley, Jack Daynes, Andrea Bonnacelli all crossed the whitewash, while Nick Tuckett touched down for a brace of tries.

Jamie Deal was prolific with the boot, as he kicked five goals, while Tomley and Palcau also kicked one apiece.

“It was another emphatic performance and after the win last week, it is great to see some real consistency of results home and away,” said Whincup.

“I expected us to play well, but I didn’t expect us to get that scoreline, especially against such a good team.

“We were fantastic to be fair, we did everything we said we were going to do before the game and executed it.

“It’s fantastic for me to see them have back-to-back performances in our last two games, it’s absolutely brilliant and there is nothing more pleasing for a coach.”

The fixture was a top-of-the-table clash with Oxford and Swindon occupying the top two spots in Pool Two with St George hitting the summit, courtesy of the win.

“The win means we should win the league, there shouldn’t be any problems for us now,” said Whincup, whose team have two league fixtures remaining.

“The motivation is just pride for the boys, they live and breathe for this club and work very hard for each other.

“They also know they have to perform because we have two squads.

“It being a local rival helped, I’m not from the area but you quickly find out how much of a rivalry Swindon and Oxford have in all sports.

“It always means something to the boys to win against them.”

Whincup’s troops will play their final home league fixture of the season on Saturday as they entertain bottom-of-the-league Southampton Spitfires, who have claimed just two wins so far this season out of their eight fixtures.
