It was men against boys, admits Learmonth

Corsham Town 1, Bideford 5

CORSHAM Town felt the full force of a rampant Bideford side in the Toolstation League Premier Division on Saturday, as they were put to the sword at The Southbank.

The Devon side had the game all but won in the first half with four unanswered goals, as they completely outclassed their opponents.

Corsham fared much better in the second half and Dan Sloan pulled one back, only for Bideford to add a fifth goal and see the game out at 5-1.

With The Reds four goals down at half-time, Corsham caretaker boss Graham Learmonth faced a difficult team talk, but he asked his men to go out and win the second half, or at least draw it.

They made a good start as Booker Woodford’s header was cleared off the line and Dan Sloan nodded in the rebound.

Controversy followed as the Bideford centre back climbed all over Woodford in the box, but referee Adam Nunn waved away appeals for a spot kick.

The visitors made absolutely sure of victory with a fifth goal, leaving Learmonth to rue his team’s trouncing in the first half.

He said: “We didn’t start very well and it was men against boys, literally.

“They are a very experienced side.

“They were outstanding. All the old heads were in there and they were just too good for us.

“They are the club everyone wants to beat and I can’t understand how they have been struggling.”

But Learmonth was much more pleased with his team’s display after the interval.

He said: “We played ever so well in the second half, for the whole 45 minutes we played in their half.

“It would have been interesting if we’d got a second.”
