WILTS LEAGUE: Kev Cooks up title bid for next season

9:50am Wednesday 19th November 2008

WROUGHTON boss Kevin Cook believes he is setting the foundations for a crack at next season’s Wiltshire League Premier Division title, after watching his side demolish Bradford Town 4-0 on Saturday, writes ANTHONY MARSHALL.

A brace from Lee Curtis and strikes from Andy Bryan and Chris Rivers helped Wroughton to the deserved three points, to leave Cook delighted at the reigning champions’ polished display.

The manager admits that, having lost six games already this campaign, retaining their crown is beyond them, but after bringing in midfielder Ollie Sly from Westside and ex-Forest Green Rovers Academy striker Frankie Hunt in recent weeks, Cook is looking forward to next season.

He admitted: “It was a very pleasing performance and probably our best of the season. We took our chances, which is maybe something we haven’t done enough in recent weeks.

“We’ve made a couple of good signings recently and they’ve really helped strengthen the team and have made a massive difference.

“Having been in local football all of my life, I know we’re not going to win the league this season - the teams at the top just don’t seem to be losing.

“But we’re building for next season and getting the basis of a good side with more strength in depth.

“I would be happy with a top three or four finish this year, and then to push on and challenge next season.”

The Premier Division’s top three all won at the weekend - with Calne Town, Melksham Town and Purton seeing off Pewsey Vale, Shrewton United and Marlborough Town respectively.

Purton’s game saw them run out 4-2 winners thanks to goals from Gavin Allen, Colin Yates, Martin Pope and Gary Hogg.

In Division One, SKS Blyskawica continue to lead the way following a 2-1 win over Minety, with their goals coming from Robert Sawyer and M Wovoka.

KC FC are hot on their heels however, and strengthened their claim with a 5-3 victory at home against Lower Stratton. Mark Bowsher and Dave Levett both hit doubles for KC and Chris O’Connell was also on target.

Intel overcame Castle Combe 2-1 thanks to Roy Trevest and an own goal, while there were six goals shared between Chalke Valley and AFC Castrol.

Gary Donnelly, Nick Camden and Ben Parsons all netted for the Valley to clinch a point from the encounter.

Swindon Irons were the big winners in Division Two, hitting 10 without reply away at lowly Castle Combe Reserves.

Leaders Greenmeadow recorded their 11th win from as many games with a 2-0 victory over third-placed Moredon Cheney in a fiery affair.

Cheney had player-manager Lee Ashby sent off after a clash with Greenmeadow striker Stuart Hodson, who then went on to score on the half-hour mark from close range.

However, the numbers were evened up as the front man was shown a second yellow card for dissent to an opposition player after scoring.

Greenmeadow wrapped it up on 65 minutes when Steven Stewart lobbed the Cheney keeper from 25 yards.

Elsewhere, Blunsdon United Reserves drew 2-2 at KMLC FC, Marlborough United Reserves picked up a 4-2 win away at Wilton, and Byrons Wanderers edged a 3-2 scoreline against Pembroke.
