Last week’s hot weather followed by heavy rain and cold winds affected catches on the Bristol water trout fisheries.
At Chew it was still pretty difficult except in almost perfect conditions.
The fish will feed well on the surface when the cool wind decreases and with the warm water they remain in the top couple of feet.
Floating lines are all that is needed at present so do ensure that your flies are not dropping too deep by using buoyant or bushier fly on the point or try normal mono rather than flouro which sinks very quickly.
The deeper water areas are the places to concentrate on for bank fishing – Walley, North Shore, Woodford or Nunnery Point. Boat fishermen will find the best sport in the Dam basin but should also look around False Island, Nunnery Spit and Moreton Point where some better resident fish have been showing.
Top fish of the week was a 5 lb 10 oz rainbow taken by Ryan Alderson from Walley bank on a green holo Diawl Bach. Another 3000 trout have been stocked this week.
It was a similar story to Chew at Blagdon last week with catches affected by the weather conditions.
Still good hatches of buzzers some evenings but hard work during the daytime.
Shallower areas and pints are now seeing quite a growth in the weed and this can make fishing deep less productive.
Stay near the surface with some floating patterns or use just one fly with a little more dressing on to slow down to sink rate.
Boats can try casting around the margins of the weed beds as here there is loads of food available for the fish.
The Barrows had another good week. More fish were stocked early on and this has helped to encourage resident fish to feed.
Many of the older anglers are still fishing on the mouse, a successful if rather less skilful method of fishing.
If you do decide to fish static on the bottom do not leave your rod unattended as this is against the Salmon 7 Freshwater Fisheries Act as well as against the company rules and regulations.
Anglers found away from their rods will be asked to leave the water.
Chew produced a total catch last week of 368 fish averaging 2 lb 6 oz topped by a brown of 4 lb 12 oz and rainbow 5 lb 10 oz with 15 limits.
At Blagdon 446 fish averaging 2 lb 7 oz were taken topped by a brown of 3 lb 8 oz and rainbow 5 lb 8 oz with 16 limits. The Barrows yielded 283 fish averaging 1 lb 10 oz topped by a brown of 2 lb 0 oz and rainbow 3 lb 0 oz.

The annual Orvis Competition was fished at Chew Valley for the 27th consecutive year.
This popular event always attracts some of the best anglers in the area competing for well over £1000 worth of Orvis tackle prizes and once again there was a good attendance.
The bank anglers set off from 7 am and most of the 13 fishermen headed for the deeper water areas of the North Shore, Woodford and nunnery.
Fishing was never easy and the eventual winner Colin Oram stayed on the North Shore where he managed to land four fish, enough to win him the first prize of an Orvis Western rod.
Rod Newton fished next to the winner and also took four fish for second place with Phil Oakes landing two fish for third.
A total of just 17 fish were caught and 6 anglers failed to score.
The boats set off at 10 am and also headed for the deeper water of the Dam basin.
Boat anglers were restricted to floating lines only and many found obliging fish feeding on the surface before the wind increased and the temperature fell.
Three anglers managed to catch their eight fish limit bags. Glyn Holmes fished a washing line method with nymphs and a peach booby while Tony Baldwin took his fish on dries.
At the weigh in these two anglers tied for first place both having weights of 22 lb 1 oz but Glyn took first prize having caught his fish 30 minutes before Tony landed his last fish and gained an extra 8 oz time bonus giving him the title of Orvis Champion. Nick Long clinched third place.

The fifth round of the Chew Valley Evening boat league was fished on Wednesday and after a hot sunny day hopes were running high for a great evening with decreasing winds and lots of rising fish. At first quite a few fish were moving and a few were taken immediately on dries although they were nor easy.
Within an hour the wind increased and the temperature fell several degrees and the fish disappeared.
At the weigh in most anglers were disappointed and cold, especially the two who decided to fish in shorts.
Of the 25 competitors eleven failed to catch and only 18 fish were taken in total. Martin Burgess took top spot with three fish taken on dabblers tweaked across the surface.
Andy Haskins also managed three to take second place with mark Stevens taking two for third.
League after 5 matches: 1. Mark Withyman 74 points; 2. Martin Burgess 73; 3. Andy Beattie 68; 4. John Bowen 64; 5. Tony George 60; 6. Ben Keedwell 51.
