Clean sweep for St Laurence School athletes


Athletics: The St Laurence Athletics team has achieved the massive feat of winning all titles at the West Wilts Athletics competition for the second year running.

The competition held at the University of Bath saw boys and girls teams from Years 7-11 take on the best from 8 other schools which included 2 sports colleges.

The team finished Area Boys Champions, Area Girls Champions, Track Champions, Field Champions and Overall Track and Field Champions.

The Year 7s enjoyed their first taste of competitive Athletics.

The girls finished 1st overall dominating both the Track and the Field.

Sabine Kingston (W) dominated the sprints winning both the 100m and 200m clocking a record time into a big head wind. Charlotte Haynes () matched her, winning in both the 800m and the Shot Putt and Jesse Hulbert (W) finished 2nd in the Long Jump.

The girls were joined by Issi Ralph (B) in the sprint relay team which also gained first place in a record time.

The Boys team showed great spirit and camaraderie but failed to gain the same levels of success as the girls and finished in fifth position with the best performances coming form Curtis Cleverly () (4th 200m), Evan Liddle () (4th 1500m), Ross Dewar () (4th Long Jump) and Theo Spence () (4th High Jump).

Despite some fabulous performances the Year 8 girls only managed to finish 5th against strong opposition in their group.

Millie Johnston () had a fine competition finishing 1st in the 800m, 2nd in the 200m and 3rd in the High Jump alongside Naomi Gibbons () who arguably put in the best performance of the day winning the Long Jump with a PB of 4m28cm.

The Year 8 Boys took the momentum of their fine cup performances into the event to narrowly get beaten to the top spot by a single point. Richard Knowles () had a fine competition taking the 100m title and finishing joint second in the shot.

Endurance machines Miles Burton () and Alex Carter () demonstrated their class with comprehensive wins and records in the 800m and 1500m.

At the Year 9 age group we had big victories for both the Girls and Boys teams. Anna Alexander-Holmes () showed her class with victories in the 200m, a record win in the Long Jump with a distance of 4m90cm and a close 2nd place in the 100m.

Katie Stone () and Albany Burton () continued with the dominance on the track with wins in the 800m and 1500m and the relay team of Anna, Katie, Tamar Kingston () and Lucy Symons () picked up the win in the relay.

In the field Becky Tamin () won the High Jump despite missing out on the whole of the season with injury.

Spurred on by the girls success the boys weren’t to be out done. Sam Weston (W) was in sublime form winning in the 100m, Long Jump and after some protest the 400m. Freddy Cook () and Max King () added to the victories with wins in the 200m and Shot and all three were joined by Sam Turner () for the sprint relay title.

The 10/11 Girls amassed a gigantic points score in winning their competition. Sprinters Becky Tyler () and Robyn Pinder () led the way with wins in the 100m and 200m sprints and Katherine Turner () broke the record and took the win in awful conditions in the 800m.

Tess Brunton () placed first in the High Jump and second in the Long Jump and alongside CJ Brown, Robyn and Becky placed first in the Sprint relay.

The Boys also performed well missing out on the top spot be a measly 3 points. Robin Aldridge () dominated the sprints winning in the 100m and 200m and Jake Aubrey () jumped to victory in the High Jump with a distance of 1m70.

Congratulations to all those who participated and represented the school. All students were a credit and some of the performances were breath taking.

The winning of all three trophies for a second successive year is a first in the history of the competition.

A big achievement for all the students and staff that have worked so hard leading up to the success.
