CROQUET: Swindon recover to earn fine draw

SWINDON Croquet Club bounced back from 3-0 down to draw 4-4 with a touring side from Watford Croquet Club.

Watford were on their annual tour of the west country and each match was very evenly matched.

However, in the morning session Watford were in a commanding position as they won all their games, with Jim Wallen (from Kington Langley, playing for Swindon) and John Small narrowly losing by two points to Ian Parkinson and John Moore when time was called.

Arthur Ingersoll for Swindon was another who was just defeated by just a single point against Peter Chadwick.

This dreadful morning for Swindon was capped off with Cliff Cardis loosing by three points against Mark Homan and then Neil Morrison was easily swept aside by John Bee, losing by a huge margin of 18 points.

In the afternoon the Swindon’s luck appeared to turn with the doubles coupling of Rosemary Wall and Roger Bedells leading the way, winning by four points.

Cliff Cardis then beat Ian Parkinson, a scratch player, by eight points in a very tense and enjoyable match.

Swindon’s turn-around continued as Jim Wallen beat Mark Homan by 11 points, despite having one of his balls pegged out half way round.

John Small also got a deserved win, having led convincingly for most of the game, beating John Moore by six points.
