A & B CUP
Blue Circle 8 Bratton 0
BLUE Circle booked their place in the next round of the AM Print & Copy of Trowbridge-sponsored A & B Cup after a convincing second-round victory.
The Cement men got off to the perfect start, scoring after only three minutes when Pete Ayton shot past Kev Balchin in the Bratton goal.
The second followed three minutes later as Matt Bradley scored.
It was 3-0 as Wayne Bristow got in on the scoring act.
With the match now settling down, Bratton gradually became more involved and created some chances of their own but Circle’s defence remained intact.
The match then turned for the worse for Bratton on 37 minutes as Sam Tucker was dismissed for his second cautionable offence.
With the second half only seven minutes old Circle increased their lead to 4-0 as Luke Smith scored.
Ten minutes later he made it 5-0 and then a further 10 minutes later he completed his hat-trick to make it 6-0.
Totally outplayed, Bratton seemed to have accepted the inevitable and conceded a further two goals inside the last ten minutes Neil Watts and Dean Osment scoring.
Broughton FC 1 Trowbridge Wanderers 2
TROWBRIDGE Wanderers waltzed through to the next round of the A&B Cup by dispatching Broughton FC.
Wanderers started and finished the better of the sides and they took the early lead thanks to a thunderbolt of a header from Chris Brady.
Wanderers had chances to double and even triple the lead, but for the misfiring Tom Pang and the athleticism of Wiltshire in the Broughton goal.
Pang spurned a few chances along with Dan and Adam Mercer.
However, down the other end Liam Newble in the Trowbridge goal kept the strikers at bay, making two great one-on-one stops.
Brady at the back, alongside Crease and Scammell kept Broughton flustered and it wasn’t long before Brother Brady doubled the Wanderers lead.
Colin Brady this time turned in a great bit of work to add to his growing tally.
After the restart Wanderers continued to frustrate the forward line of Broughton with striker Julian Putt trying to weave some magic to no avail.
Dan Mercer failed to capitalise on some great work to add to the scoreline and Pang saw some efforts stopped by the agile Broughton Goalie.
Wanderers felt aggrieved late on when three strange decisions saw the referee give free kicks on the edge of the box where Wanderers felt that penalties should have been awarded.
Broughton did manage to grab a goal back through Steven Toogood, however their lacklustre performance saw them whittle the clock down and failed to make the game go to extra time.
Great performance from Trowbridge Wanderers with exceptional defending and great team work see them through to the quarter finals.
Freshford United 4 Bradford United 3
ANOTHER local derby saw Bradford United travel to play Freshford United, and it was the visitors who dominated the opening exchanges and scored through Ricky Montacute.
Bradford then went on to double their lead midway through the half as John Baker tapped in.
With the interval approaching, Freshford pulled a goal back with a shot from Rich Bliha.
With the second half a few minutes old Bradford increased their lead to 3-1 as Kegan Smart scored. Shocked into action Freshford began their fightback and made it 3-2 with a goal from Phil Little and then it was 3-3 as Paul Mockridge bagged the equaliser.
With the game seemingly heading for extra time Mike Little popped up to score the goal which broke Bradford’s hearts and send Freshford through 4-3.
The Deverills 1 Westbury United A 1 - Westbury win 4-3 on penalties
SECOND Division Westbury United A took First Division The Deverills all the way to extra time in the A & B Cup match and then went on to win the shootout.
Scott Gallazi put The Deverills in front, before Sam McQueen equalised for Westbury.
Matters then turned sour for The Deverills as they were reduced to nine men, having had two players sent off.
The second half saw the nine men play the better football but they were unable to make a further breakthrough in the stubborn Westbury defence.
Extra time couldn’t resolve the deadlock so the match went to the dreaded shootout and Westbury held their nerves and progressed to the next round.
The Stiffs 2 Foresters FC 9
THE Stiffs involvement in the A & B Cup ended at the hands of the Foresters.
The Stiffs started much the better of the two sides and soon found themselves two goals to the good thanks to strikes from Mike Ritson and Chris Benson.
Things then started to go downhill as Adrian Giles scored an own goal and seven minutes before the break Darren Whiting scored Foresters' equaliser.
The second period saw total domination by the Foresters as they scored a further seven unanswered goals from Graham Griffiths (2), Luke Turvey, Gavin Klukowski, Paul Walker (2) and a penalty from goalkeeper Alex Shaftoe.
SPRING CUP
Bratton Reserves 0 Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves 4
TROWBRIDGE Wanderers eased into the next round of the Bradford’s’ Building Supplies-sponsored Spring Cup thanks to a comfortable win against Bratton Reserves.
A clinical first-half display from Wanderers saw them four goals to the good before half time.
The first goal came after 10 minutes. Craig Ashworth, collecting the ball 25 yards out, had time to settle himself before firing an unstoppable strike into the bottom of the net.
Six minutes later Wanderers were awarded a penalty for handball by Chris Fenwick and Nigel Penelhum stepped up to calmly beat the keeper.
It was all Wanderers at this stage and 10 minutes later Sam Wersfold unleashed his own 25-yard strike that dipped and caught the keeper out as he let it slip through his hands for 3-0.
Jamie Moth then got on the scoresheet after neat build-up play the ball fell to Ferris Lamrabet who whipped in a great cross for Moth to have the simplest of finishes.
Bratton did have one chance which hit the post but rebounded to safety.
The second half was much the same but poor finishing from Wanderers stopped the score from being bigger.
Chance after chance went begging as Wanderers took their foot off the gas.
Wanderers now look forward to a quarter final tie against Castle Combe.
Chippenham Old Boys 2 Fever FC 2 - Fever win 6-5 on penalties
FEVER progressed to the next round of the Spring Cup thanks to a penalty shootout.
The first half of the game saw visitors Fever take a two-goal lead with strikes from Tom A’Court and Pete Spong.
The second half saw Chippenham fightback with two goals of their own to take the match into extra time, James Pope and Chris Leonard getting the all-important touches.
Extra time couldn’t break the deadlock but Fever came out on top 6-5 in the shootout.
The Angel 2 Frome Town Sports A 0
THE Angel progressed to the next round, both goals coming in the first half through Louis Stillman and James Reeves.
Worton & Cheverell 1 Castle Combe 7
CASTLE Combe started the stronger and Mark Sharratt opened up the scoring to put Combe ahead.
This was quickly followed by a Combe second when Jamie Penton crossed from the left to find Martin Riddell in the 18-yard area to volley the ball into the right hand corner.
Jamie Penton’s efforts were rewarded when he finished well to add Combe’s third goal of the game.
Worton then scored a goal of their own to make it 3-1 through Jake Flower.
One of the best moves of the match involved a skilful back heal from Wesley Christian to find Mark Sharratt whose through-ball found Karl Sharratt and he rounded the keeper to fire Combe 4-1 up at half time.
Combe began brightly in the second half and within minutes of coming on as a sub Carl Dawson added to his goal tally for the season to fire Combe 5-1 up.
This was soon followed up by a quality individual goal, when Dawson with ball at his feet from 20 yards saw the keeper of his line and fired the ball into the top left hand corner to leave the Worton keeper no chance.
Not to be outdone by his fellow strikers Mark Sharratt fired in his second of the game and take Combe to the next round.
DIVISION ONE
Steeple Ashton 1 Lavington 2
STEEPLE Ashton moved a step closer to the relegation zone after losing 2-1 at home to Lavington.
Myles Hickton scored the only goal of the first period to give Lavington the lead.
The second half saw Lavington double the lead when James Campbell tapped in from close range.
Ashton pulled a goal back through Guy Rowley with 12 minutes left but it was too little too late as Lavington held.
Frome Town Sports 4 Semington Magpies 6
SEMIGNTON moved to mid-table after securing a win at Frome Town Sports.
Frome started the better and were 1-0 up inside the first 10 minutes, Ben Keates scoring.
Midway through the half they doubled the lead as Arthur Burtenshaw struck.
Shocked into action Kelvin Lockwood then pulled a goal back for the Magpies, but by half time it was 3-1 to Frome as Kevin Warder scored.
The second half belonged to Semington and, in particular, Lockwood as he scored a further three goals in the 49th, 58th and 68th minutes.
In between Chris Rogers also scored in the 52nd minute.
it became 6-3 as Stuart Barber scored and the last goal of the match went to Frome with a shot from Phil Webley.
DIVISION TWO
North Bradley AFC 3 Calne Eagles 0
NORTH Bradley claimed a hard-fought win against familiar sparring partners Calne Eagles at The Peace Memorial Ground.
Both teams played some good football throughout but Calne Eagles looked the most likely to score early on, when their livewire striker Stu Windsor was twice denied by Bradley’s veteran keeper Mark Binns.
North Bradley nearly took the lead themselves when their top scorer Pete Stephenson was denied on the goal line by Kev Hamersley.
Unfortunately, both players clashed heads in the challenge, which resulted in Stephenson being forced to leave the field with a nasty cut to his head. North Bradley scored the opener after 20 minutes, as Chadwick Cain forced the ball home following a frenetic goal-mouth scramble.
Within 10 minutes, they had doubled their lead when Rob Clarke‘s mishit shot deceived Brett Cullen in Calne’s goal and spun just inside the post.
In the second half, despite the scoreline, Calne Eagles continued to play with a belief that they could get back into the game.
However, North Bradley put the result beyond doubt with 30 minutes still to play, when a great run and cross by James Taylor was headed home bravely by Neil Maidment.
In the closing stages, the impressive Mark Binns made a great save from Phil Gay, and Calne’s sub Tommy Ludford put a rasping shot just over the bar.
Westwood Social Club 4 FC Chippenham Youth A 3
WESTWOOD Social Club ran out winners over their closest rivals FC, Dan Thorne putting them in front, before Luke Thirlwell equalised some 10 minutes later.
Thorne put Westwood back in front on the half hour mark, but again Chippenham equalised this time through Mick Austin.
The second half saw Thorne complete his hat-trick to put Westwood back in front at 3-2.
Not to be outdone Chippenham hit back again for a third time, their goalscorer being Tommy O’Cain.
But Westwood made sure of the points when Duncan Frew scored.
DIVISION THREE
Bradford United Reserves 2 Mere Town YDT 2
DESPITE being reduced through injury to 10 men for the last 25 minutes, Bradford Reserves thoroughly deserved their point.
Bradford spurned four easy chances before taking the lead through Paul Tunnell, but Mere's greater share of possession was rewarded when Tony Fripp headed in a corner just before half time.
After the break Bradford continued to create the better chances and Elliott Hinton restored their lead only to see it wiped out five minutes later when Greg Sheppard converted another corner.
Down to 10 men Bradford then defended resolutely to take their point.
United FC 2 The Lamb 3
UNITED remain rock bottom after losing at home. Martin Thorpe put United in front only for Sam Stevens to equalise.
The second half saw The Lamb take the lead through a Dean Gumm shot.
The lead was shortlived however as United scored their second through Mariusz Jackiewill.
The Lamb’s winner came with 20 minutes to go through Mark Sheppard.
