South Counties Senior Vase semi-final
Marlborough’s biggest game of the season ended in heartbreak after they blown away by the visitors’flying start.
Defeat at home for the first time in a year could not have come at a worse time for Marlborough at Saturday’s semi-final went away from them from the start.
Alchester started strongly and instantly had Marlborough on the back foot.
The scoring was opened when the visitors scored a drop goal, and this was soon followed up with their first try.
Alchester drove a maul from a lineout, and crossed in the corner. They soon followed this up with a further try, following a switch in their centres. Soon after another try left Marlborough 20-0 down.
Marlborough did manage a penalty before half time, with scrum half Nathan Morgan kicking the points, to leave the score 20-3 at the break.
A lectire from captain Dave Lemon and coach Gary Sharp spurred Marlborough to greater efforts in the second half and they played with more passion.
Marlborough managed a try a few minutes from the end, when after some forward crashes through Lemon, Patrick Campbell and Billy Trevaskis, there was an overlap out-wide and Alex crossed on his debut to score.
But it was too little too late, with the home side knowing they hadn’t performed as they have throughout the season.
Marlborough travel to Supermarine on Saturday.
