SWINDON College Old Boys thumped Gosford All Blacks 37-19 away at the weekend in the Berks/Bucks & Oxon Premier to maintain their slim hopes of a top two finish, writes PAUL TITCHENER.
Old Boys’ number eight Ashley Brown was the star for the away team, as he scored a hat-trick of tries.
While Liam Farbraces scored “one of our best worked tries all season,” according to Old Boys manager Martin Peaple, kicker Scott Buchannan also made two conversions.
The Old Boys dominated the first 25 minutes of the game, scoring two tries right from the off.
However, the next 15 minutes was all about Gosford as they fought back strongly, and the away team were glad that the half-time interval arrived when it did.
Gosford continued their charge in the second half scoring once more, before the visitors reasserted their dominance and controlled the match until the end.
The win leaves the Old Boys still six points away from the top two automatic promotion places, and Peaple believes that with games quickly running out this season, “realisticly, a promotion spot is probably now out of the question.”
However, with a home game against leaders Broadmoor this weekend Peaple admitted: “If the lads pull together and battle like they did against Gosford, then there is no reason why we can’t win the game, and have a great end to the season.”
n IN South West One East, Wootton Bassett were trounced 85-7 at high-flying High Wycombe.
In contrast, Wootton Bassett 2nd managed their third win on the spin with a 14-7 defeat of in-form Cricklade in Dorset and Wilts One North.
