A FULL-TIME mum from Westbury has been crowned a national champion – despite only taking up the sport two years ago.

Lorraine Moore, 41, came out on top at the National Welsh ITF Tae Kwon-Do Championships in Cardiff, taking the gold medal in the women’s patterns event.

“I was looking to get back into sport and I wanted to do something challenging,” said Moore, who lives on Stormore, Dilton Marsh.

“My son Cameron was doing it so I went along to a few sessions and got hooked on it.

“It gives you so much self-confidence and teaches you all about respect and now I train five times a week.”

Moore practices five nights a week in Trowbridge, Devizes, Chippenham and Melksham with her coach Don Deedigan. Patterns Tae Kwon Do sees competitors face off one-on-one but requires them to execute pre-set routines, instead of fighting.

“You need to have a good memory for patterns because some routines have as many as 38 moves to remember,” said Moore.

“I was receiving tips from some of the senior black belts before I went and my coach was fantastic as well.

“It was my first major ITF Championship and sometimes I don’t realise what an achievement it is.

“I love the sport and I have to step back sometimes and think ‘I can’t believe I’ve just done that’.”

Next up for the medal-winning Moore are the Imperial British Championships in Reading, this October.
