SWINDON Supermarine took their unbeaten Southern League Premier Division run to seven matches last night as they picked up a surprise point against visiting Cambridge City.

Playing their third match in six days, the hosts were good value for a 1-1 draw against a side that has been challenging in the higher areas of the league all season.

Cambridge took the lead after 28 minutes when slack defending allowed a cross to fly in and Steve Gentle despatched the header to put his side 1-0 up.

Supermarine were on top after the break and they got their reward when Danny Allen’s one-two and subsequent pass allowed Leigh Henry to poke in off the post after 65 minutes.

Manager Mark Collier said afterwards: “We’ve kept a decent side at bay and looked a threat ourselves.

“With the amount of football we’ve had, to pick up four points this week is a good effort by everybody.

“The fitness levels were excellent and we looked like a team that is hard to beat.

“That’s very pleasing when you’re in a relegation battle, and if those performances stay as they are, we’ll soon be climbing the table, fingers crossed.”

Next up for Marine is a trip to Nuneaton Town tomorrow, and although the injury problems at the club are improving, skipper Matt Robinson and Mark Barnes are still out.

Collier is hopeful centre-back David Bampton, who has made an excellent start to his time at Hunts Copse, will be back in time to play a part.

“Nuneaton are a big non-league football club,” said Collier.

“They will expect to be in the top two and get promoted and rightly so.

“They’ve got some very good players and have a very experienced squad, so a difficult game awaits us there.”

Nuneaton currently lie fifth in the Southern League table and will move up to second if they win their games in hand on those above them.
